With 6 interior lakes and surrounded by Lake Huron, there is ample opportunity to boat, fish, and kayak around Bois Blanc Island. Because Lake Huron and the Great Lakes are sometimes called "The Third Coast", beginner/intermediate kayaking is best done on interior lakes or close to shore on Lake Huron. For advanced kayaking, Lake Huron and the Great Lakes are truly paradise. Multiple islands, Lake Huron's 19 Must-Visit Lighthouses, and a 99 mile+ Chain of Lakes Water Trail are just a few of the adventures to be had. Opportunities for stunning landscape, wildlife, and night sky photography abound, with beautiful sunrises/sunsets and occasional opportunities to photograph the Northern Lights.
The Chain of Lake Paddler's Guide is available from "Paddle Antrim, a 501(C)3 organization whose mission is to protect our water resources by using paddle sports to connect people to waterways. Paddle Antrim is leading the efforts to develope the Chain of Lakes Water Trail, which is a 99+ mile inland water trail in northwest Michigan made up of 12 lakes and interconnected rivers." -- Source: Paddle Antrim
For those just visiting Bois Blanc Island, kayak and bike rental are available from Boblo Style. ATV Rental is available from Boblo Rentals. For accommodations, check out The Hideaway Bed and Breakfast.
Kayaking/Boating: The water routes below were done with a kayak but the ones to Mackinac Island traverses a shipping channel and is perhaps best done by a motor boat. From this particular home, the lake is approximately 0.6 miles away, so a kayak can be pulled on a kayak cart to the lake, thus avoiding having to load on top of the car.
Hiking/Running/ATV Riding: Although the running routes below were done as runs, most were run on ATV trails, which are abundant on the island. However, please be respectful of private property and wildlife sanctuaries.
Photography: The combination of water, clouds, forest, spectacular sunrises/sunsets, and wildlife allows for wonderful photo opportunities.
